The little details are by far the most important
A blonde woman, around 25-30 years of age stood at the library’s information desk, a book in one arm. Her outfit would have been ‘classy’ if her skirt were not unnecessarily short, leaving more leg bare above the knees than such a skirt should do; her business shirt unbuttoned enough at the top to reveal part of her cleavage, certainly something that wouldn’t have been acceptable if she were actually at work. The way she leaned forwards as she talked to the male working at the desk suggested she was flirting, instead of actually asking for help to find something, the tan mark on her ring finger suggested she was either recently single, or was cheating on her partner.
Nearby, a trio of teenagers all of different racial backgrounds was sitting at a table surrounded by science and mathematics textbooks, the three of them most likely students at the university the library was located in. Two of them dressed neatly, one casual, the other overly neat; the almost pained look on the boy’s face suggesting he’d rather be studying something else, but wasn’t given the option to do so by his family. The third’s outfit was loose and more casual, the hole in one knee of their jeans suggesting they were a trouble maker, probably only hanging out with the other two for the correct information on their subjects of study to avoid failing…
Blinking to clear his mind, the man known as Sherlock Holmes shook his head, voicing his thoughts aloud to himself. “There’s no need for that, I am not a detective here; I’m nothing more than a common man, trying to find his way in this world…” He muttered, sighing. “Though obviously I’m a much smarter man than most of the people here… at least in a practical sense.”
He kept watching the other visitors in the library a little longer, more out of habit than anything, before finally managing to turn his gaze back to the book he held in his hands. Despite his interest in learning about the world he’d managed to find himself stuck in, the infamous detective found himself unable to concentrate. Any other day he’d found himself in the library he hadn’t had the problem, but today was different; something felt off to him.
“Someone is watching me…” Holmes muttered to himself, looking around carefully from behind his book, trying to decide whether or not it was just him being paranoid or not.

((I'm not copying what your saying but I wanted to do the same thing since in the movie he did the same as Sherlock))
A blonde woman who couldn't be any older than 26 judging by how she was dressed, a book under her arm. It was a cook book, a French cook book, and judging by the skimpy way that she was dressed it was going to be put to use. The tan mark where a ring was supposed to be around her finger and the way she was leaning against the desk flirting with the man on the other side of it, coupled with the way that he so readily responded could only mean that this was the man that she was cheating on her husband with.
A trio of teenagers: a Hispanic, an African American, and a Caucasian sat together at a table were peering over mathematics books. Though it looked like the worst dressed, the Hispanic, was simply hanging out with the other two for the correct answers, nothing could have been farther from the truth. Truth of the matter was he was the smartest amongst the group.
Then there was him. He was familiar in a sense. The way he dressed and acted showed that he was not from this area. In fact, judging by the way he was dressed he wasn't even from this world. He had not ran across anyone who hailed from a different world like he did. Let alone someone who looked just like his arch enemy.
His eyes scanned the man who was muttering to himself, reading his lips to understand what was being said. Upon the comment of being watched, he shifted in his seat. He wanted the man to know he was there. In fact, he was still trying to make this world see that he was there. He was not a man to be misunderstood.
He was Professor James Moriarty and he was by far the most sophisticated man in the room.

Re: The little details are by far the most important
With a sigh, the detective looked back down at his book and tried to ignore the feeling he had, trying to convince himself he was just imagining the feeling out of habit. Watson had called it paranoia, but Holmes had always tried to convince himself he knew better, that it was his instincts. After reminding himself of that, he found it harder to ignore the feeling, glancing over the top of his book again to try and find out who, or what, was causing him to feel so uneasy.
He caught a glimpse of someone in the corner of his eye, a man with dark hair. Feeling a sudden urge to get a better look at the man, Holmes suddenly snapped his book shut, getting a few irritated looks from people, along with a few odd looks he guessed were because his sudden movements seemed strange to them.
He put the book under his arm to carry with him and quickly got up from his table, going over to the area he’d gotten it from; acting as if he’d suddenly decided to find another book on the same topic. In reality though, he’d realised the location he’d found the book in would allow him to get a better view of the man he’d spotted.
“I have absolutely no idea who this man is…” He muttered, not sure if it was out of habit of having his friend John Watson by his side or because he’d simply developed a habit of talking to himself over the years. “So why is it that he seems so…familiar?”

Re: The little details are by far the most important
James couldn't help but chuckle as he watched the man moving around in his chair with a book. Sherlock Holmes, the only man who was smart enough to know that he was observing everyone in the room. Back home, people had said that they were cut from the same cloth. That the reason they were so alike, had the same mannerisms, was because they could very well have been brothers.
He knew it was a lie.
He was nothing like Sherlock Holmes. Sherlock Holmes did things for the good of the family. James Moriarty, well, he did things for his own personal gain. For instance, the only reason he had come to this library was to observe the new man he had seen around campus. His ruse, like the ruse of the man looking through his books, was that he was grading papers.
But he had enough observation. It was time to meet.
Packing his things away, he shouldered the bag he carried everything in and headed over.
"I know who you are," he calmly said, acting as if he were looking through books himself.

Re: The little details are by far the most important
Having seen the man start packing his things up, Holmes had moved further down the shelf, still pretending to be looking for another book. He’d had a feeling the man would at least pass by, but he hadn’t expected to hear the words the man said once he’d joined him at the shelf.
His hand slipped as he went to pull a book off the shelf, accidentally dropping it, as well as knocking down a few others around it. He pulled a face, but quickly turned around to look at the man, straightening his coat; acting as if he’d never knocked them over.
“Excuse me?” He said, as if he didn’t know what the man meant. “I think you may have mistaken me for somebody else…”
Even as he said those words, Holmes wondered whether they were actually true or not, the man seeming even more familiar to him now that he was closer. He slowly looked over the man, studying him carefully, working his way up from the man’s shoes.
He noted that even though the outfits here were different from home, he still picked up a certain air of superiority from the man, the kind only teachers had in his world; professors especially. The man’s style was neat Holmes noticed and –assuming people still had certain ways of dressing for certain things- though it wasn’t quite casual, it wasn’t what Holmes would label as ‘fancy’ either.
Then he noticed the man’s eyes.
Although with the man facing one of the shelves like he’d been doing himself earlier, Holmes thought they were eerily similar to the last man he’d seen from his own world before ending up in this one, a chill travelling down his spine as he thought about his last moments there. The deafening sound of rushing water was one thing he remembered all too clearly; the other being his eyes.
“It can’t be him…” Holmes muttered under his breath, unconsciously taking a small step back from the man. “He wasn’t there when I ended up here. I was alone…”

Re: The little details are by far the most important
James couldn't supress a smile when the man knocked the books off the shelf. It was as if it was his old nemesis had forgotten what he had looked like.
And yet...
James knew it was not him. He was much older than himself, his arch nemesis had been around the same age as he. There was also an almost paranoid air about him, James gathered it was from the man who would have been by his side had it been his Holmes.
"You're Sherlock Holmes," James replied as he picked a book out of the row he was looking at. The cover read The Hound of the Baskervilles. It was by far his favorite of the novels, even though he himself was not in it. He had found the tale enrapturing and had almost gained a new respect for his adversary. "From this. Well...I'm not quite sure you're that Holmes. You have a much different air about you than he did."
James turned to face the man, his eyes looking over him. He was disheveled and judging by the permiating smell between the two of them, one of them had been drinking and had not bathed in a day or so. Of course, the smell of the bathing could have simply been the gym stop he had made before his first class this morning and the crude body spray he had picked up from the store did nothing to hide it.
Even if it wasn't his Holmes, simply knowing that there was another verse out there with another Holmes almost terrified him. What if there was another Moriarty? He had done some scientific research on the appearance of different characters from different fictional things over the past few weeks and he had learned that many of them believed themselves to be the only one.
He was surprised, however, by the reaction that he recieved from the man. The step back, the shiver as he looked into his eyes. They hadn't come from the same world but they had come the same way.
"Let me guess, you came during the fall from the cliffs as well?"

Re: The little details are by far the most important
Frowning at the fact that this man really did know who he was, the detective paused to look at him properly, unable to hide his curiosity as he did so. Though the man’s eyes weren’t exactly the same as his old rival James Moriarty’s, they still had the same look in them; an odd familiarity despite Holmes never actually having met the man before.
“At least not this version of him…” Holmes accidentally said to himself out loud just after the man pointed out he was different to a book character.
He pulled a face when he realised he’d spoken out loud, unsure if he’d already had the habit before the fall and never realised it with Watson around so often, or if he’d only recently started doing it as a result of the sudden absence of the doctor…or maybe it was just a habit he had after drinking?
He really couldn’t tell anymore.
Noticing the man turning to face him properly, Holmes couldn’t help himself; moving back towards the man, back to where he’d been standing before moving away, wanting to study him more carefully.
He didn’t dare move any closer though, instinctively staying just out of arm’s reach, the distrust he’d had of his own world’s Moriarty seeming to suddenly transfer to this man despite Holmes still not having any definite proof it really was him; or at least an alternate version of him.
“If you don’t mind me asking sir…” Holmes started slowly, still carefully studying the man as he spoke. “What exactly makes you think I’m him? Or rather, some other him…?”
Holmes had read somewhere once -he assumed it was recently in one of the books he’d read since arriving in this world- that certain people’s lives always seemed to cross paths with each other’s; that throughout history there were souls that always met up again at some point with friends, family, lovers and even enemies in each lifetime. Supposedly even if the two people didn’t look or even act the same, they’d still recognise each other, that odd familiarity Holmes was feeling now seeming to hang about the person when the two souls met up again.
Destiny was what they’d called it.
At the mention of the cliffs, Holmes suddenly thought the idea was more plausible than he’d originally thought it when he’d read it, knowing then that in one way or another; this man was Moriarty.
Slowly nodding in response, Holmes took a breath to calm himself, hiding the panic he suddenly felt as he stood there staring at the man. He’d opened his mouth to respond properly, but for once the detective was speechless.
Normally he’d feel compelled to voice his opinions, or as he was realising, his thoughts, or he’d have some smart comment to make, an observation to point out or a question to ask; but now no words came to him as he stood there trying to process the fact that there was more than one of himself.
More importantly, he was having a hard time adjusting to the fact that there was another of his rival, who was right in front of him.

Re: The little details are by far the most important
There was some solace that this Holmes was very close to the one he had known back home. During the last few months that he had observed his rival, he noticed that he would murmur to himself. It might have been the fact that the cocaine had become worse, or maybe even his love for scotch. None-the-less, it was something.
When his old nemisis turned to look at him, he allowed ample time to study his face. He was...older than expected. Though, he knew from some of the research he had done that age was often changed to make things more understandable. How could the media expect someone as young as he to be a genius? No, no. It was easier to imagine them as this mans age: older and with more worldly experience. There were most defenitly wrinkles under his eyes, showing that either he had not slept or he was older than he even looked. He was smart to not stand to close. If he was threatened, James knew how to work his body to destory another man.
"What makes you think your my rival?" he chuckled, looking him over. "Should I start at the beginning? For starters, the look of you. You may be years older but you have his eyes. Those eyes that are always observing what is going on around you. The manner of your dress claims that while you have impecable style, you are sloppy. It means you either don't have enough time on your hands or you don't care what others necessarily have to say about you. But you know what gives it away the most? When I mentioned the falls, you knew exactly what I was talking about. You remembered how we almost fell to our deaths. You knew you survived, you didn't think I did. And, judging by the fact your not younger, your a different him."
He took a step closer and smiled, "Oh how I've missed you Holmes. No one here is half as smart as I. No one here gives me a challenge."

Re: The little details are by far the most important
Holmes frowned slightly at the way the man chuckled as he explained his reasoning for thinking that Holmes was in fact Sherlock Holmes; he didn’t like how at ease the man seemed compared to himself, the detective not spotting any usual signs that would normally hint someone was nervous or uneasy. He slowly nodded however, to show he understood the reasoning behind the man’s guess.
“I am not sloppy!” He responded, rolling his eyes. “I just have a rather…unique sense of style.” He added with a smirk, fixing one of the sleeves on his shirt before pulling a face.
“So…if you we both survived the fall, then what do you think could have happened to the other us’?” He asked curiously, trying to figure it out for himself. “You don’t think they um…didn’t make it, do you?”
Holmes couldn’t help but worry about it once he’d asked, though he wasn’t exactly sure how he’d react if he found out that the other him he’d just learned of had died. Despite being distracted thinking about it, he still noticed when the ‘other’ Moriarty stepped closer, causing the detective to flinch slightly and take a step away again. He didn’t like that the man smiled, in his own world it usually meant the professor was planning something or was waiting for something he’d planned to happen.
“I’m sorry, but how exactly have you missed me? You said yourself that I’m not ‘your’ Sherlock Holmes…” He asked, trying not to look worried as he looked into the man’s eyes.

Re: The little details are by far the most important
Though he seemed at ease, inside he was dark and cold. He knew this man had killed him, he had known the fall from the falls were his last few moments. He knew them moments before the fall. The detective may not have known he would live but they had both hoped that the other would die.
Or at least his Sherlock had hoped he would die and he had hoped that his Sherlock would die. This man, in all theory, he harbored no ill will against. "In all theory," he spoke calmly, "the other us could have lived as well. If we both lived..." which he knew wasn't true, he had died, "then they may have lived as well."
"I've missed having a rival," James gleefully remarked, "now that you're here in this world, I have someone who is as smart as I am. At least if you are as smart as my Holmes."

Re: The little details are by far the most important
“If they lived, then why did we end up here and not them…?” Holmes asked curiously, tilting his head slightly to one side. He had a feeling he knew the answer to the question, but asked anyway in hopes he was wrong. “Or perhaps they are in fact here, in a situation quite similar to our own?”
He’d asked the question just to see how this Moriarty would react, wondering if he worried about the fate of his other self as Holmes was of his counterpart. If that Sherlock Holmes had died after all, did that mean if he’d stayed in his own world he’d have died too?
“What do you mean by ‘if’ exactly?” He asked, leaning away slightly, the look on his face suggesting he didn’t trust this man at all; in fact he made Holmes nervous. Having no way of telling whether or not this Moriarty was as smart or as cunning as his own, or if the man was even worse, bothered the detective. “My observations of those who come here has led me to believe that people here just aren’t as smart as people back home. Even if I were in fact, not as smart as ‘your’ Sherlock Holmes, I have no doubt that I’d outsmart every other person here.” He added with an almost smug look about him.
There was a brief silence that followed, where Holmes stood studying the other man’s facial expression carefully. He’d often been able to guess a person’s intentions or true feelings on a situation back at home, with the exception of a few people; like Moriarty himself. He had a feeling that this man would be the same.
With a slight frown, Holmes suddenly recalled the remark the other man made and couldn’t help but question it.
“And why exactly do you need a rival…? Is a great professor like yourself, or at least the Moriarty I know, incapable of functioning without one?”

Re: The little details are by far the most important
"I know I didn't live," James replied casually as he placed Hound of the Baskervilles back where it belonged, his eyes no longer wanting to meet Sherlock's. "I attribute this to my passing on. After the fall...when I was passing here...I saw my Sherlock. He had been there, checking my pulse. He shook his head. I knew I was dead the moment I fell I just...I didn't want to believe it."
He looked back over at this Holmes, much older and much wiser than his own had been. James briefly wondered if he had the same problems that his Holmes had been having in the days leading up to the fall. There was the alcohol, of course, and the cocaine. Somehow, looking at this Holmes, he knew there wasn't a problem with the cocaine. Just the drinking.
"My obversations," James replied, turning his body so that he blocked the other way into the row of books. He knew the way Sherlock was standing must have been so that no one would be let in that way, "of this place show me that there are a few. Most of them have died, were past men, but there are still a few here. They even have an organization called MENSA. But none of the people who have traveled from different worlds like we have are as smart as we are."
He examined the man, smirking, "Why do I need a rival? I need a rival because I need a challenge. Life is dull and boring if you know whats going to happen. With you, or the other you, I was never sure what would happen."

Re: The little details are by far the most important
“So…you’re here because you didn’t survive the fall…?” Holmes asked almost hesitantly, worried about what that meant for him. Did it mean in his own world, he’d been the one to die? “You guess that is why we…or at least you ended up in this place…”
Normally that would be something Holmes would have picked up faster, but today he was regrettably slower thanks to the alcohol he’d consumed before going to the library. He’d actually been surprised they’d even let him in; people like Watson knew straight away when he’d been drinking, the doctor rarely even allowing Holmes outside when he suspected as much.
He frowned slightly at Moriarty’s explanation of the ‘smart’ people in this world, shaking his head. “I take it none of those people are here though, not in this library. Probably not even in this town…wherever it is.”
He went quiet as the man answered his question about needing a rival, slowly nodding as he considered the statement.
“You have a point there. It does get boring at times,” Holmes admitted with a small sigh. “Especially here with no cases whatsoever to amuse myself with. People don’t seem to appreciate such things as much here…”

Re: The little details are by far the most important
"Yes, I assume that is why I am here," James replied, forcing himself to look at the bookcase. He didn't want to admit that assume was the dirtiest word in the book to him. He didn't assume anything, he knew. Deep down, he knew that even if he found his way back to his own world, he would not like what was waiting there for him. It would be instant death, no life left in his body.
"Doesn't Watson tell you that you have no need to drink," James replied as he picked up one of the other novels on the shelf, thumbing through it as he casually spoke. "You can smell it on your breath. As a professor to the youths of the current world in which we live, I have seen many come to my classes drunk. They speak of coffee as if it is a good thing that will help when you are wasted however."
"Yes sadly, I have a few educated individuals who attend my classes but they are not at the levels which we have attained," James replied, "However, as far as cases go, I am aware that there are police station around here. Perhaps they could use with you catching the bad guy."

Re: The little details are by far the most important
“There is nothing wrong with having the occasional drink…” Holmes said as he looked over his shoulder to try and hide his frown, avoiding asking the question he’d been about to, not really wanting to hear the answer he thought he’d get. He knew though that ‘occasional’ wasn’t an appropriate word for his personal drinking habits, but he’d never admit it, especially not to a Moriarty, let alone his friend Watson. “I don’t get drunk; it’s bad for the mind…I don’t need coffee.” He muttered as an excuse, doubting the other man believed it when he himself didn’t.
“I doubt any of them will ever reach our level, most people here I’ve noticed simply don’t appreciate intelligence like we do.” Holmes said after a pause, slowly looking back at Moriarty, brushing a hand through his messy hair. “They’d let me help them?” He asked curiously, raising an eyebrow.

"The occasional no," James replied, "I myself enjoy the occasional scotch on the rocks. I find it helps me to relax after a long day at work or training my muscles, either my brain or my fists. But you, you do get drunk. I have seen too many a drunkard to not be able to notice one when I see them."
"No one will ever reach my level," James proudly boasted, "Yes, perhaps the cops would allow you to help them. Of course, you'd have to go to school first. Imagine that, the great Sherlock Holmes one of my pupils. I could teach you so very much."

Re: The little details are by far the most important
Holmes couldn't help but frown at being called a drunkard, briefly glaring at Moriarty before curiosity got the better of him, so he stayed quiet as the other man spoke; until he mentioned Holmes being a student of his of course.
"Excuse me?" He said rudely, not looking amused by the idea. "Why would I want to be a student, especially under you? You tried to kill me and my frie- ...Watson and his wife in the past, so why would I trust you with something like that?!" He hissed, accidentally causing people passing the aisle they were standing in to pause and look at them, forgetting for a second that they were in a library and that it wasn't technically even the same man that he was referring to.

Re: The little details are by far the most important
He knew[/i[ that inscensed Holmes but that was his intention after all. He wanted to show Sherlock just how far he had fallen from being the proud investigator in his own world. Or what James assumed was proud. His Sherlock had been the proudest and yet the most humble man in all of England. He could have worn many awards and yet he took the praise with a humility.
It sickened him.
"You would have to be a student to gain a degree for criminal investigation," smirked James as he casually rested an arm against the bookcase. "I teach a course in criminal investigation."
He laughed when Sherlock almost said friends. "The great Sherlock Holmes, the man who once claimed that he never needed anyone, has friends? My dear boy they aren't your friends. They used you. Watson was a doctor who used you. Besides, [i]I never tried to kill you."

Re: The little details are by far the most important
"Why on Earth would you need such a thing?" Holmes asked with a confused look on his face. "You never needed anything like that in the past...and how did you end up doing that?"
He frowned at the way the other man laughed at him, pretending to look at some of the books that were on the shelf beside him to hide the hurt look in his eyes. He didn't try and deny the statement that his associates used him. He'd been starting to wonder if that was true ever since Watson had gotten engaged.
"I apologise..." He said after a pause, avoiding looking at the man. "I suppose I forgot momentarily that you are not that Moriarty."

Re: The little details are by far the most important
"You need a thing, Sherlock, because the times have changed," he hated to say it but nothing was like it was in the world he had come from. Men no longer dressed up, instead jeans were a common thing. "And the reason I got a job in such a thing is because I know it better than anything else. If you were the Sherlock I know, you would remember that I left you little clues to try and stop me. I enjoyed the games. I had no friends either."
He looked at the man who wasn't trying to cry, feeling bad that he had caused that. "You should read this." James replied, extending the book entitled The Final Problem. "It explains what happened to you and I, in my world."

Re: The little details are by far the most important
"Right..." The detective frowned at the difference from the world he was used to, not entirely understanding why it had been changed, but he didn't bother asking about it.
"My own Moriarty was the same, though the clues he left didn't always seem to be left on purpose. He did also enjoy the game though." Holmes told the man, purposely not responding to the part about having no friends, he guessed it was true and though for the most part he didn't mind it, there were times that Holmes wished it weren't true.
He turned back to face Moriarty, glancing down at the cover of the book, raising an eyebrow at it before the man explained what it was about. "So it's the...'world' you came from?" He asked quietly as he reached out to take the book.

Re: The little details are by far the most important
James looked this Sherlock over, seemingly just taking in everything but in all actuality he actually enjoyed looking at the other man. Despite his every day appearance, there was something different to him that he rather enjoyed. His mind was as sharp as James so that did not deter from how he felt about the older man.
"I always left clues on purpose," chuckled James, "The game was the only thing I had left in this world and I do so enjoy my games. Particularly Scrabble. It is one of the modern things to come from this world that I do not find an absolute waste. I can show you sometime."
James looked over the book, a feeling of dread washing over his soul, "Yes...that's where I come from..."

Re: The little details are by far the most important
Holmes raised an eyebrow as he watched the other man look over him. He was used to people staring at him, but the way this man was looking at him felt different to him, though he wasn't able to pinpoint exactly how it was.
"The only thing left?" He repeated, tilting his head slightly to one side. "How, may I ask was it the only thing? Weren't you a professor, or was that just the Moriarty I knew?"
He found himself strangely curious about the man, causing him to wonder whether or not he would have been curious to learn more about the Moriarty in his own world, if he hadn't been so busy chasing after him to stop his plans.
"Scrabble? What on Earth is that?" He asked, pulling a face at the strange name before glancing back down at the book. "...perhaps instead of reading it you could just tell me ..or, at least recount your version of the events after I have read it?"

Re: The little details are by far the most important
James looked away from Sherlock, almost afraid of how the man would think of him looking him over as if he were a woman. Though men who enjoyed the company of other men were not looked down on in this world like his own, he didn't know how this man felt. His own Sherlock had loved a woman named Irene Adler and James assumed this Sherlock felt the same way.
"Your counterpart had taken my fortune and my job in my world," James chuckled, "The game was the last thing I had. I enjoyed it, no matter the problems we had together. I was a professor in my world but the university fired me when my crimes were brought to light."
He chuckled and grinned, "Scrabble is a wonderful game. I can show you how to play it later if you want. It's not very time consuming and I do have a class to teach soon. I could let you read it first. I assume you are a quick reader."

"Ah. Well I'm not sure about the job in my world, but Watson's...wife had just helped the authorities to reclaim all those ill-gotten funds." Holmes told him, frowning slightly as he spoke of Watson's wife. He'd never really been too fond of her. Watson was the closest thing he had to a friend after all and his marriage had taken that away from him.
"What kind of game is it exactly? Is it at all like chess?" He asked curiously, though he assumed it had to be a decent game at least if the great Moriarty liked it. "And yes, I am a fairly fast reader, don't worry about that."
